Climate The transcontinental city of Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and sixth largest in the world with a population of more than 14 million. This eastern Mediterranean city enjoys weather that's typical for that particular region, meaning that it's generally quite warm and not all too wet, although it does rain every now and again. Location Straddling the Bosporus Strait between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, the historic and economic hub of this massive city lies within the European part of Eurasia, while more than a third of its population lives on the Asian or Anatolian side of the strait. It is the only major city in the world that is spread out over two continents. It is this location at the crossroads between Europe, and Asia and the Middle East that makes it such an enormously fascinating city. Landmarks Istanbul is home to some of the world's most impressive manmade structuresamous examples are the monumental Hagia Sophia and the equally as impressive Blue Mosque. Both buildings lie across from one another in the heart of the city's Old Town, which, incidentally, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides those two major attractions, Istanbul also has numerous Turkish bazaars, spice markets and a number of marvellous museums. Long story short, it is a city that everyone must visit at least once in their life. Climate Istanbul's climate is a mixture of Mediterranean, humid subtropical, and oceanic. And, due to its vast size and diverse topography, Istanbul also exhibits microclimates. At different times of the year, some parts of the city will benefit from more rainfall, have higher levels of humidity, or be warmer than others. While Istanbul itself isn't a beach destinationt's more a cultural and historical cityhere are several seaside resorts nearby, such as Atabey and Ahmediye. Summer weather in Istanbul Rainfall Summer in Istanbul falls between June and September. This can also be considered to be the dry season, with each individual month receiving less than 50mm of rainfall over 8 days or less. August is the driest month of the yeart gets no more than 20mm of precipitation and has 4 days on which it rains. July is the second-driest month, while June and September are third and fourth. Temperature The days are long and hot, with up to 10 sunshine hours per day, clear skies, low wind speeds, and temperatures averaging around 24°C. With average highs of 28°C in July and August, visitors should expect temperatures to exceed 30°C for several days at the peak of the season. In those high-summer months, the mercury also doesn't drop below the average low of 19°C at night. June and September are slightly cooler, but are still very warm by all accounts. The humidity is relatively low in Istanbul during the summer months, which does help to make the heat more bearable. Sea Temperature The temperature of the water in the Bosporus Strait averages between 19°C and 22°C in summer. This is ideal to seek refuge from the sometimes scorching heat in July and especially August. Summer is arguably the best time of year to visit Istanbul, which is exactly what most tourists do. It can get very crowded then, but if you're looking to go swimming, walk around and maybe even do some outdoor activities in the surrounding area, this is when you should visit. Keep in mind, though, that prices and rates are at their highest this time of year. Autumn weather in Istanbul Temperature Istanbul in the autumn is still quite pleasant. Temperatures gradually begin to fall in late-September and precipitation levels increase slowly, but it should remain relatively warm. The average temperature in October is 16°C, with highs of 19°C in the afternoons and no lower than 12°C during the nights. November gets a bit chillier, featuring highs of 14°C and lows of 9°C. Rainfall Higher rainfall averages, with 100mm of rainfall spread out over 13 days expected in November, however, mean that visitors are likely to see some prolonged showers. November, incidentally, is one of the three wettest months of the year, together with the two following months of December and January. October is relatively dry, receiving about 60mm of rainfall in the course of the month and having 10 days with rainfall. This, of course, means that October has 21 days without any precipitation whatsoever. Sunshine Hours With increased precipitation, compared with the summer season, expect cloudy skies for at least part of the day and foggy, overcast mornings. These clouds and fog seriously limit the amount of sunrays that hit the city in autumn. While September still has 9 hours of sunshine per day, October has 7 hours and November only has 5 sunshine hours, which makes it one of the least sunny months of the entire year. Winter weather in Istanbul Temperature It's chilly and wet in Istanbul during the winter months, between December and March. Temperatures fall to below 8°C, and it isn't uncommon for it to freeze lightly overnight. January and February are the coldest months, with average temperatures of merely 6°C. Rainfall There's the possibility of a few inches of snow by February, and rainfall averages are at their highest this season. 100mm of rainfall is expected over 17 days in December, which is the wettest month of the year. Wind speeds also really pick up at this time, which make low temperatures feel even cooler. Sunshine Hours Because of this cloudy weather, Istanbul in winter is relatively darkhis is relative because other more northerly destinations in Europe are much less sunny than here. Spring weather in Istanbul Temperature and Rainfall Spring falls between the end of March and May. As summer approaches, it begins to warm up, with highs of 20°C in May. But at the start of the season, temperatures are still quite lowust 12°C on average in Aprilnd rainfall averages are high, although not as high as winter. In April, for example, around 60mm is expected over 11 days, so you may expect showers and even the occasional thunderstorm. Sunshine Hours Days tend to start off cloudy and overcast, though by the end of May wind speeds are at their lowest and skies start to clear, so visitors can begin to appreciate the warmer temperatures and the noticeable increase in sunshine hours. Spring starts off with 7 daily sunshine hours in March, but in May that number has increased to 9 beautifully sunny hours. What's the Weather like in Istanbul in October Temperature October is the start of autumn in Istanbul. Temperatures drop significantly and rainfall averages increase. While it's still generally relatively warm and pleasant in Istanbul, it is much colder and wetter than the summer months and no longer beach weather. The average temperature in Istanbul in October is 16C, with highs of just 19C. The highest temperature ever recorded in the area at this time is 35C so it might still be possible to do a little sunbathing, but in general this is not a great time for a beach holiday in Istanbul. It will generally be cooler in the northern regions of the province, and average temperatures of just 14C or 15C are expected in the Sarıyer villages to the north. Overnight, temperatures fall to just 12C the lowest temperature ever recorded in the area at this time is less than 1C so it will feel much colder in the evenings. Average Sea Temperature As temperatures fall, the sea cools too; in October the average sea temperature is 18C. Days are also shorter, with just 7 hours of sunshine on average each day. It's a similar story across the country, though in the south it's still slightly warmer. Alanya, for example, sees average temperatures of 20C 23C in Dalaman and highs of 25C. Sunshine Hours Correspondingly, the days are longer and both Alanya and Dalaman see around 10 hours of sunshine on average each day. Precipitation Precipitation levels are much higher in October across Turkey. In Istanbul, 60mm of rainfall is expected on average over ten days. There will be some showers, but, at this time of year, it's unlikely they will be heavy or prolonged. Rainfall may be accompanied by thunderstorms, but by the end of the month this is a less common occurrence. It will also be slightly wetter in the northern parts of the province, where they see more rainfall year round. In the south of the country, the increase in precipitation is much more marked. In Alanya, for example, they only expect 10mm of rainfall over four days in September, but by October there is likely to be 80mm over seven days eight times more rainfall than in the preceding month. Humidity It's always quite humid in Turkey, but at this time the humidity rises to a very uncomfortable 80%, compared to the lowest month in terms of humidity, July, with only 65%. There are also likely to be around 9 days of fog, which shouldn't be too heavy or cause too much disruption, but may not clear quickly. Istanbul Hotels for October Muyan Suites Muyan Suites offers luxury accommodation, in the heart of the Old City. In fact, it's just 500 metres from the Grand Bazaar. There are few amenities in comparison to some of the bigger chain hotels in the area, but the hotel prides itself on service and quality, which more than makes up for a lack of spa and wellness centre. Pera Palace Hotel The grandly, luxurious and baroque Pera Palace Hotel, Jumeirah is Istanbul's most iconic hotel. Located in the vibrant Beyoglu district for over a century, it prides itself on a combination of timeless glamour and elegance, with genuine Turkish hospitality. Designed by renowned local architect Alexander Vallaury, the hotel has played host to an impressive list of guests, including Ernest Hemingway, Agatha Christie and Alfred Hitchcock. Bars and Restaurants Sütlaç is the Turkish version of rice pudding. It is said that the recipe originated in the Topkapi Palace. Traditionally it contains rose water, but you can also get it with chopped walnuts and raisins. Most traditional Turkish restaurants will have it on the menu, and it's definitely worth trying. Halil Lahmacun Lahmacun is the Turkish equivalent of pizza. A thin dough is topped with minced meat, vegetables and herbs. Try Halil Lahmacun for a really authentic and delicious experience. This tiny restaurant is located on the Kadikoy Balik Pazari, and you can watch the chefs prepare the dish and cook it in traditional wood burning ovens. Street Stalls Turkish ice cream is called "dondurma", which literally means "freezing". What makes Turkish ice cream different is that it has a sticky texture and it is more resistant to melting presumably because this makes it last longer in the extreme summer temperatures. You can get dondurma at street stalls and in cafes all over Istanbul. Things to do in Istanbul in October Uludag If you like skiing and winter sports, Uludag is just a few miles away in Bursa Province. The mountain resorts offer a range of sporting activities between October and April, with plenty of classes for beginners and more challenging slopes for real enthusiasts. Alternatively, visit Kartepe, overlooking Sapanca Lake, about 80 miles east of Istanbul. Kartepe's "Snow Hill" is a good beginner and intermediate hill, with three chair lifts and a 1700m summit. Tours run to Kartepe from Istanbul during the season. Gulhane Park There are plenty of green spaces in Istanbul, though no primary urban park unlike other large cities. One of the largest and most historic is Gülhane Park the name meaning "rosehouse park" or "house of flowers", adjacent to and on the grounds of the Topkapi Palace. The Museum of the History of Science and Technology The Museum of The History of Science and Technology in Islam is located in the former stables of Topkapi Palace, on the western edge of the park. It features over 140 replicas of inventions in fields such as astronomy, geography, chemistry, medicine, and physics from the 8th to 16th centuries.
